On April 15th, 2018, a wood crate containing several documents and an ancient-looking chalice was discovered at Don the Beachcomber’s final California location in Sunset Beach, shortly before it closed forever.

The contents challenge the accepted origins of exotica—and perhaps Don the Beachcomber’s legacy itself. Did Don receive some sort of noetic download after drinking from the vessel, helping shape Tiki culture? Is Don a conduit? Is space the final escapism?
